Contribution à l’étude du peuplement des confins indo-iraniens au Chalcolithique : Caractérisation de la production céramique des périodes II et IIIa du Makran pakistanais (4ème millénaire av. J.-C.).

Abstract : Twenty-five years ago, Roland Besenval (CNRS-UMR 9993) began a new archaeological field research project in Kech-Makran, a region in southwestern Pakistan located half-way between the archaeological cultures of the Iranian Plateau and those in eastern Pakistan. This project collected many data which allowed for the first time the reconstruction of the ancient settlement of this area. Excavations at the archaeological sites of Shahi-Tump and Miri Qalat as well as surface surveys helped build the chronology of this settlement, whose earliest evidence dates to the fifth millennium BCE. They also revealed the existence of a dense settlement with an abundant material culture during the following periods. My PhD research focuses on the development of ceramic production in Kech-Makran and its evolution during the fourth and early third millennia BCE. Using ceramic analysis, this research more broadly aims to reconstruct the cultural dynamics that existed in the Indo-Iranian borderlands during Protohistory. As a result I have conducted for the first time a detailed analysis of the forms, decorations and manufacturing techniques of these ceramics, describing the evolution of these different aspects during the Chalcolithic and early Bronze Age periods. I have reconstructed elements of the socio-technological contexts in which these ceramics were made and used. I have provided maps presenting settlement patterns in Kech-Makran throughout these periods as well as the first synthesis on the archaeological cultures in the Indo-Iranian borderlands at that time.
