L'amour de l'amour chez Augustin

Abstract : Augustine offers a meditation on love which is original and decisive for the history of thought, as well as for ethics, owing to the fact that he thinks love by contemplating the mystery of the divine Trinitarian life. Indeed, if Eros in Plato is, as a daimon, a metaxu which is entirely held towards the Beauty that it desires to contemplate, and to which it aspires to be united, in return the Augustinian dilectio is the essence itself of God. Love is no longer the only movement of the soul towards the eternal Idea, but the superabundant life of God himself, as the communion of three persons, and it is thus the life of the soul in God. Love becomes a love of Love: to love, this is to love Love itself, according to a variety of forms, from the most poor to the most rich.
