Les temps longs de l'hospitalisation. Enquête ethnographique dans un établissement privé de psychiatrie

Abstract : Ambiguous policies on shortened lengths of hospital stays effect psychiatric professionals and patients in different ways. The present article seeks to gain an insight into this dual phenomenon. It will use an ethnographic investigation carried out in the private hospital sector, which although highly specialized in full-time hospital care, has up to now been relatively unexplored. We will learn that, in keeping with healthcare professionals’ objectives, hospital stays have become shorter. However, they are also more frequent. This cumulative effect lengthens the time spent in hospital. Our attention is drawn to how the participants compartmentalize their own hospital stays and other forms of social time.
