La « démarche palliative » : bilan à 10 ans

Abstract : The “palliative approach” is a concept developed in France in 2002. It has been practiced in hospitals since 2004, with the goal of giving palliative care to the maximum number of persons at the end of life who are hospitalized in acute care services. The objective of this article, based on a literature review, is to report on progress over 10 years (2005–2015) in the dissemination of this initiative and to highlight both successful experiences as well as hindering factors, in order to make a number of recommendations and identify future lines of investigation. In particular, mechanisms should be set up for evaluating the quality of care and thus the efficient use of resources allocated to facilities willing to follow this course. Parallel to the current dynamics, we need to reinforce palliative care services in facilities caring for the dependent elderly where needs, already high, will necessarily increase with the aging of the population.
