The shadow of death in patient information
L’ombre de la mort dans l’information du patient
Résumé
What role does the specter of death play when the patients are informed about their condition? By observing medical consultations in the hospital environment, we can highlight the role played by death in doctors’ decisions concerning what can be said to patients. In this article, we examine the motivations behind the information and show that, beyond the psychological explanations generally provided, the logics that underpin doctor behavior come from various other registers: ethical, therapeutic, and social.
Quelle place le spectre de la mort occupe-t-il dans l’information du patient sur son état de santé ? L’observation de consultations médicales en milieu hospitalier permet de mettre au jour la place de la mort dans les choix des médecins concernant ce qu’ils disent aux patients. On examine ici les ressorts de cette information pour montrer que, par-delà les explications psychologiques habituellement évoquées, les logiques qui sous-tendent leurs conduites relèvent de divers autres registres (éthiques, thérapeutiques et sociaux).
