Variabilité des volumes des dépôts d’avalanche et relations avec la morphologie des couloirs d’écoulement (Bessans, Savoie, France)

Abstract : Snow avalanche is one of the most common active processes in the Alps. They form snow deposits and cause regular damage and disruption to communications networks. However little is known on factors controlling volume variability of snow avalanche deposits. We therefore focus on a statistical study of the temporal and spatial variability of avalanche deposits volumes as well as their relationship with corridor morphology. The case study includes 46 avalanche corridors located in Bessans, a French Alpine town. Data used, and particularly the volumes of deposits, are mainly from the EPA (Enquête Permanente des phénomènes Avalancheux) set up in 1898. Our first results highlight a significant reduction in deposit volumes since the beginning of the 20th century. However, the quality of the data is not uniform through time. The detailed analysis of deposit volumes can only be done over the period 2003-2017. Over this period, the spatial variability of deposit volumes from the different corridors studied is significant. Our statistical approach shows that the variables related to the size and the altitudes of the corridors control the deposit volumes. However, these relationships are only relevant for winter season (November-February). Meteorological factors could be responsible for deposit volumes variability in spring (March-May).
