This thesis deals with the representations of time in Wolof (a Niger-Congo language spoken in Senegal). Through a semantic and cognitive approach, it studies and gives an account of the various linguistic processes used to express various time relations in Wolof. The first hand collected data is analyzed, via the notion of schema, on the basis of the linguistic mechanisms (lexical as well as grammatical) involved in the construction of meaning. This work also addresses the issue of the relationship between space and time and questions the epistemological nature of the representations (abstract vs spatial and iconic) of temporal terms. The main chapters concern: (i) The verbal system (tense and aspect) as well as the lexical elements and the verbal and nominal phrases which convey an aspectual value; (ii) The adverbial phrases of time (lexemes, nominal and adverbial phrases and subordinate clauses) and the temporal discourse markers; (iii) The temporal and hypothetical subordinate clauses; (iv) The polysemy of some morphemes expressing a temporal value.

Cette thèse porte sur les représentations du temps en wolof (langue africaine ouest-atlantique parlée au Sénégal). Elle a pour objet l'étude des différents procédés linguistiques utilisés pour exprimer le temps en wolof, selon une approche sémantico-cognitive. Il s'agit donc de rendre compte des différents processus linguistiques et cognitifs engagés dans l'expression des diverses relations temporelles. A partir des données collectées et d'une analyse des mécanismes linguistiques de construction du sens (tant lexical que grammatical) impliquant la notion de schématisme, ce travail s'interroge également sur les relations entre espace et temps afin de réfléchir sur la nature épistémologique des représentations (abstraites versus spatiales et iconiques) des termes référant au temps. Les chapitres concernent principalement : 1. Le système verbal (temps et aspect) ainsi que les éléments lexicaux et syntagmes à valeur aspectuelle, 2. Les circonstanciels (lexèmes, syntagmes nominaux adverbiaux et subordonnées) et connecteurs temporels, 3. Les subordonnées temporelles et hypothétiques, 4. La polysémie de quelques termes exprimant une valeur temporelle.
